ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Two dogs were extricated from the wreckage of a fatal crash that killed two people on the Kenai Peninsula this week and are recovering.
The wreck happened north of the Seward and Sterling Highway intersection Wednesday night and involved a Chevrolet pickup truck and a motorcoach.
Authorities say the truck that 57-year-old Leonard Weimer Jr. was driving collided head-on with the motorcoach at mile 38 of the Seward Highway around 6 p.m. north of the Tern Lake pullover, where authorities reported black ice conditions.
The crash killed Weimer and his female passenger, 56-year-old Kelly Brown.
In an update Thursday, Alaska State Troopers said both Weimer and Brown were pronounced dead at the scene.
Cooper Landing Emergency Services posted pictures of the dogs on Facebook after the crash and a plea for the public to help them find relatives of the two who died.
“Our volunteers used their personal vehicles to bring these dogs to Soldotna Animal Hospital, where ‘Lulu’ recieved life saving care,” the update read. “Achilles and Lulu are healing well and being fostered by 2 of our volunteers until we can either connect with a family member of the deceased or find a loving home that will keep them together.”
Lulu — the tan and white dog — can be seen in one photo covered in a blanket along a dirty snowy road with an oxygen mask covering her snout.
Achilles lays beside her covered in a gray blanket.
In later photos, the pair are seen recovering on overstuffed dog pillows.
Cooper Landing Emergency Services says they believe those are the dog’s names based on social media posts. Officials say the dogs had microchips, but were not registered.
“They are expected to make a full recovery but Lulu (the white dog) may need follow up care in the coming weeks to be sure her hips are healing correctly,” Cooper Landing Emergency Services said in a Facebook message to Alaska’s News Source.
“We appreciate the help from Soldotna Animal Hospital and their staff who provided this emergent care. If you would like to contribute to Lulu’s veterinary bill, feel free to call Soldotna Animal Hospital at (907)260-7851.”
