SPRINGFIELD, MO.- After two dogs were found in a dumpster yesterday, a local non-profit is reminding some that pets are not trash.
Thursday, Rescue One was alerted of two dogs found in a dumpster behind an old pizza hut building on South Grant Avenue.
“I notice a lot of times with changes in seasons, it can happen,” Rehkop said. “Right now, there’s a lot of changes going on with school getting out, summertime, people going on trips, people moving.”
Rescue One Adoption Coordinator Michelle Rehkop says even when you can’t take care of an animal, dumping is never the way.
“It’s a big problem. It’s a community-wide issue right now because we do have a lot of different shelters and rescues in the surrounding areas,” she said. “But shelters can only take so many animals because they have a capacity.”
Due to the fullness of shelters and the increase in animal abandonments, the organization is looking into ways that will help ease that worry.
“You know, we have our intake coordinator trying to network with different shelters out of the area, but there’s so many. The need is just all over the Midwest,” Rehkop added. “It’s just a common problem in the Midwest and a lot of times they’re shipped out to more northern states or states on the coasts.”
Rehkop also says that they will be looking at security footage from nearby businesses but are asking anyone with information to do the right thing and call them.
“You know, if somebody sees anything, knows anything, you know, let us know or let the police know. That’s definitely something you can do.”
