EASTHAMPTON — Two dogs died Monday afternoon from smoke inhalation after accidentally turning on the stove in their home. Easthampton fire and police found that there had been combustible materials left atop the stove, which ignited when the pets turned it on.
At about 3:15 on Monday, Easthampton Public Safety received a call reporting a structure fire, according to a statement from the Easthampton Fire Department. When Easthampton Fire and Police responded, they found smoke coming from the home.
Deputy Chief Kevin Benson led the crew that entered the kitchen to find that the fire had already self-extinguished. Crews found heat signatures of the fire’s extension into the attic and “pulled the ceilings in the kitchen to expose this area to fully extinguish the fire,” according to the statement.
It was determined through a joint investigation between Easthampton Fire and Police that the fire has been caused by the family pets turning on the stove, igniting the combustible materials resting on it. It was found that the two dogs had died from smoke inhalation.
“Please keep this family in your thoughts during this time,” the statement from Easthampton Fire reads. “All of us at Easthampton Public Safety are extremely sorry for the losses that this family experienced.”
Northampton Fire Rescue, Southampton Fire and Barnes Air National Guard provided mutual aid for this event.
