Two dogs perished in an apartment fire above the SnugZ Dispensary near the intersection of Railroad Boulevard and Grand Street in Eugene on Thursday night.
Fire crews were dispatched to the scene just after 5 p.m. to find a fire coming from the back of a two-story apartment above a “commercial occupancy,” according to Eugene-Springfield Fire Department officials. Dispatch had relayed information to crews that a child was trapped on the second floor.
While attacking the fire and searching for a victim, residents at the apartment informed fire crews that all known human occupants were accounted for but two dogs were missing.
Firefighters reportedly encountered high heat and zero visibility on the second floor and requested an additional hose line over a ladder and through a window while a truck company performed vertical ventilation on the building, which allows the release of hot gasses and smoke to improve the visibility and viability of the building’s interior, according to a press release the fire department issued late Thursday.
The fire was contained to the second floor and while no occupants or firefighters were injured, the two missing dogs were found dead.
The cause of the fire was unknown and under investigation.
