GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — A 23-year-old Traverse City man was arrested Tuesday for abusing his three dogs.
Lieutenant Jon Morgan with the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office said one of the dogs was taken to Cherryland Humane Society earlier this month by a relative.
Staff at CHS took the dog to the emergency veterinarian because the dog looked like it had been beaten.
Lt. Morgan said that’s when animal control was contacted for an investigation.
While investigating, animal control received an anonymous phone call on October 21 from someone who said they knew who the dog belonged to, and tipped them off that more dogs could be at that person’s home.
Deputies with the sheriff’s office went to the home in Garfield Township with a search warrant.
A 23-year-old man and his 24-year-old fiancé were caught trying to drive away from the house. When deputies stopped the car, they noticed a child was also in the car and called the man’s mother to come get the child.
While on the phone with the man’s mother, she told deputies she knows her son loses his temper sometimes and punches his dogs, according to the sheriff’s office. She also said one dog had a damaged esophagus, so it wasn’t able to eat, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies searched the home and found two dogs inside. Lt. Morgan said the dogs were malnourished, had no access to food and appeared to be abused.
Deputies arrested the man for intentional animal abuse. His fiancé was also arrested for animal neglect.
Lt. Morgan said he didn’t have an update on the condition of all three dogs.
