Town sees rise in abandoned dogs

BLACK ROCK, Ark. (KAIT) – Recently, there have been several cases of dogs being dumped and abandoned in the Black Rock area.

On Sunday, July 28, Black Rock Police Chief Bryan Archer was made aware of three dogs being dumped on 222 Lawrence County Road.

“Sunday I received a call from Jessica Medlock, who is a council member here in Black Rock, and stating that somebody had just dropped some puppies off on her road,” Archer said.

Medlock had found the dogs and said when she saw the puppies, she felt bad for them.

“I was so upset for the poor little puppies, and I was angry at the gentleman who thought that it was just okay to leave them on the side of the road. There’s no reason for it,” Medlock said.

The same day, Barry Raby was with his wife in Shirey Bay when they found three more dogs.

The next day, Raby brought some dog food and water to the three dogs he originally found, only to find that three more dogs were dropped off, six dogs total. He took them in.

On Tuesday, July 30, another dog was dropped off in Black Rock. This time, just a couple blocks down from city hall.

“One by one I loaded them up and brought them home, and that’s where they are at right now. We’ve been feeding and watering them,” Raby said.

Chief Archer believes the reason people may resort to this is because of how expensive it is to take care of pets.

“The reason is… a lot of it is economy, people aren’t able to take care of the animals,” Archer said, “That’s why they are abandoning them, but [if] they would get them spayed and neutered, we wouldn’t have that issue.”

Archer, Medlock, and Raby all say that abandoning these pets isn’t the solution and there are better options.

“Call the shelter, there’s shelters all over Northeast Arkansas. There’s also Facebook Marketplace,” Medlock said, “You go on there and post them and see if anyone wants a free puppy and that can give them a loving home other than the side of the road.”

“I would just like for everybody to understand that somebody will take a dog. Somebody,” Raby said. “That there’s all kinds of alternatives than taking them out there.”

Archer also says that if he catches whoever is doing this, they could face abandonment and animal cruelty charges.
