Tiny pup excited for park suddenly becomes scared when she sees “big dogs”

Hearts are breaking on social media for a tiny pup whose excitement over a day at the park was turned upside down after the “big dogs” came in.

Sapphire couldn’t wait to get to the dog park. Many dogs obsess over their park because the fenced-in area allows them to be off-leash, run free and socialize with other canines. But she previously had the dog park to herself. So when a group of “big dogs” entered the park, the tiny puppy froze, as seen in a December 8 video posted to the account @sapphire_4440.

When she spotted the other dogs, Sapphire stopped and stared. She lifted her front paw and tucked her tail in between her legs. Terrified, she didn’t know how to react.

It didn’t take her long to decide that she wanted nothing to do with the other dogs. She retreated and hopped up on the bench, shaking with fear. Her eyes filled with disappointment. Her anticipated day at the park had been ruined.

The caption reads: “Sassy Sapphire was afraid of the big dogs at the dog park today.”

Viewers flooded the comments section with words of encouragement for Sapphire. As of Tuesday, the TikTok video has amassed 630,300 views, 68,100 likes and 865 comments.

“Sapphire, girl, you’ll be a big dog someday, too. And still just as sweet. No need to fear those guys,” wrote one viewer.

A second pointed out: “Aww the shaking. Some dogs feel overwhelmed by dog parks too.”

Hoping to comfort Sapphire, another added: “My big dog sees the other big dogs at the park and gets scared too. It is ok.”

Thankfully, Sapphire wasn’t scared the entire time at the park. A comment revealed that Sapphire ended up “having fun” with the big dogs at the park. The dogs played together, and the big ones were “very kind and gentle with her.”

Should I Go to a Dog Park?

Arguments run deep about whether dog parks are safe for canines. On one hand, people love bringing their dogs there for exercise and socialization, but others believe the parks aren’t worth the potential risks and safety hazards. The decision is ultimately up to each owner.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) suggests that owners can determine if their dog is ready for a park based on its personality, health and age. It might also be beneficial to scope out different parks to find out which one might suit the dog best.

The AKC article also said puppies younger than 4 months or those without all their vaccinations should steer clear of parks. Any dog showing signs of illness should stay home to avoid spreading something to other canines.

It is helpful for dogs to know basic obedience commands before entering the park, where they might be distracted. The AKC also recommends socializing your dog before going to the park because if it is shy or nervous, the park will likely be a scary place.

Always remember to follow your dog’s cue. If it is standing at the gate or staying by your side, it is most likely ready to leave. About 30 to 60 minutes is plenty of time for the dog to get exercise and socialization. Any longer than that can overtire your pet.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
