John Oliver tried to close out his Emmys acceptance speech for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series with a sweet tribute to his dog. “This is going to be very silly,” he said. But was it? Oliver expressed love for a pup that was with his family for years and years. “She was at our wedding, and she got us through the pandemic. She was with us for two pregnancies,” Oliver began, right before the people in the control room tried to play him off. “Perfect choice of music,” he continued. “We had to say good-bye to her.” It was bleeped, but you don’t need one of those expert TikTok lip-readers to know Oliver gave a pointed “Fuck you” to whoever was trying to play off his dead dog.
Oliver finished by dedicating the award to all dogs everywhere but especially those in Doggie Heaven. Call him Drake because this one is For All the Dogs. Wow … That’s your silly acceptance speech, John?
