Five pit bulls were recovered from an abandoned house in Irvington on July 4, their rescuers saying the animals survived brutal conditions without food or water.
Yasmin Rivera, an animal rescuer from Newark, said she was told to check the home after nearby residents heard barking.
When she arrived, she found two dogs in the yard with multiple bug bites and no shade from the sun. As she made her way into the basement, she said the three other dogs she found were living in their own fecal matter with an “unbearable smell.” One of the dogs was locked in a wooden pen with serious injuries to its back legs, she said.
