Broadway Pizza Bar in downtown Kissimmee has gone to the dogs.
That’s not an editorial comment on its fine food. It refers to the graduation ceremony recently held for a class of dogs that graduated recently from a local canine good citizen academy.
Wallace K9 Training held its ceremony at the restaurant, known for being pet-friendly.
Owner-operator Jim Wallace said it’s all about providing pets that can provide a service—a service dog in every sense of the word.
The dogs “graduating” on July 17 passed the Canine Good Citizen training regiment. Passing makes them eligible to go on to test as a service or therapy dogs.
“They all have to pass tests, in crowds, leading people through buildings and up and down stairs … there’s like 10 different things they have to do,” he said. “There’s all kinds of fake programs out there. At the airport my therapy dog has been attacked by so-called service dog.”
Dina Moore works with Wallace after he trained her dog, and now they’ve expanded the business to law enforcement and school therapy dogs.
“We’re training dogs to be well-behaved in public places, providing dogs that are social with people and environmentally stable,” she said.
Wallace has spent over four decades as a canine handler in the military and in airport security operations.
Judy Richards got involved when she told someone about needing help at home, and now Murphy, her schnauzer-terrier mix, is in training as a service dog.
“His task will be to help my husband (a disabled veteran) pick up things and retrieve things,” she said. “And Jim loves working with the animals.”
