STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Maybe you’ve already chosen the perfect dog for your family. Or maybe you’re just beginning the search.
Either way, one of the most important decisions you’ll have to make is the choice of a name for your new furry companion.
But how do you choose a name? You can always pick from a list of popular dog names. Or you can check into the most popular names throughout history.
But it might also be wise to avoid the more common names. You don’t want your dog to be the 12th “Max” at the vet’s office or have another “Luna” come running when you call your dog at the park, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC).
Look at your hobbies and interests for inspiration, the AKC suggested.
If you look beyond the obvious, you can come up with something that sets your dog apart from the others in the neighborhood.
“Dogs are an extraordinary and important part of our lives, and choosing a pet’s name is a fun part of the process,” said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo. “People put a great deal of thought into naming their dogs and often spend hours trying to pick the perfect name to fit their new pet.”
