On a brisk Thursday morning, before the sun peeked over the horizon, 17 dogs arrived at the Broome County Humane Society.
The dogs had been staying at St. Landry Parish Animal Control in Louisiana, but were transported to Binghamton due to the impact of Hurricane Francine. Recent adoptions freed up space at Broome’s facility, and the Humane Society was able to take in some of the displaced dogs.
The BISSELL Pet Foundation, “a national organization dedicated to ending pet homelessness,” provided transportation for the dogs, and is helping offset adoption costs for every Broome County Humane Society animal, starting Thursday.
With 17 new dogs, the Broome County Humane Society now has about 50 dogs available for adoption, along with 75 cats and kittens — a number which means their rooms are close to full, said Amberly Ondria, the Broome County Humane Society’s Shelter Manager.
After taking a day to rest, and being seen by the vet staff, the facility said the dogs would be available to receive visitors starting Friday afternoon.

Ondria said the Humane Society also needs volunteers, especially dog walkers in the morning and afternoons, and has a wish list of items that are needed at the facility. Some of the most helpful items for the new dogs include Pedigree Food, tall kitchen bags, paper towels and clean towels and blankets.
The BISSELL Pet Foundation is sponsoring an emergency Empty the Shelters event for the Broome County Humane Society, meaning adoption fees for every animal at the shelter have been reduced to $50. All animals up for adoption will have been spayed/neutered, microchipped and are up to date on vaccines.
That event will continue until Sept. 28. Those interested in adopting must submit an adoption application, which can be completed online on the Broome County Humane Society’s website.
