LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ) – The Lynchburg Humane Society is feeling the strain after taking in dozens of animals from what authorities describe as deplorable living conditions.
The Humane Society took in 34 dogs and one parrot in 2 days.
Officials with the Humane Society said the influx is taking a toll on the staff.
“It is pretty hard on our staff because it’s 34 more dogs to take care of, more dogs to walk, more dogs to vaccinate and feed,” said Claire Lefew, Development and Communications Manager with the Lynchburg Humane Society.
The shelter is currently filled to capacity and feeling the pressure.
“We always make it work to find the space,” Lefew said.
The animals came from two separate situations involving poor living conditions. Lynchburg Police say one was an animal hoarding situation on Shaffer Street, where officers found 15 dogs and a pet bird living in deplorable conditions. The other 19 animals came from a home that surrendered them to the shelter.
“A lot of them are pretty nervous being in the shelter environment coming from that home, which is pretty common. A couple of them have skin issues that we are working on, and I believe 3 of them were pregnant. Two of them have had their puppies already,” said Lefew.
At last check, 10 out of the 34 dogs have been adopted, and several others are currently being fostered. Many puppies will soon be ready for adoption as well. The influx of animals has put a strain on the facility and its workers as they wait for homes.
In the meantime, the Humane Society is grateful for all the support from the community.
“We probably have around 70 total animals, and we have so many great ones. If you can’t adopt, you can foster or just take them out for a day for a break. There’s a lot you can do to help these dogs,” said Lefew.
The Lynchburg Humane Society continues to encourage the community to help however they can, whether through adoption, fostering, or donations.
