From the Thayer Police Department:
On April 18th, 2025 at approximately 3:23 pm officers with Thayer Police Department responded to a report that a dog had bitten a 5 year old child in the area of Brewer Street. Upon arrival, officers contacted Oregon County Ambulance to respond to the scene due to the injuries to the child’s neck. The dog was still running at large at this time. While officers were investigating, the dog aggressively charged at the officers. An officer was bitten by the dog, and officers discharged their firearms to defend themselves, and the public from the animal. The dog was killed as a result. Thayer municipal ordinance has always prohibited dogs from running at large in the city. There is also an ordinance against vicious dogs within the City of Thayer. This department responds nearly every single day, if not every single shift, to dogs running loose within the city. The resources we have with our city pound remain exhausted most of the time. We are simply asking the public to do your part in caring for your pets. Do not allow your dogs to run at large in the city. Households are limited to two dogs, unless you obtain a kennel license, which are obtainable through City Hall. Clearly the outcome of this incident is not what anybody wants to see. However, our officers will do whatever is necessary to protect the public and themselves while in the performance of their duties.
