If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know: red handbags are my thing. There’s the puffy leather clutch, the woven Anya Hindmarch day bag, and my crown jewel; a shiny, origami-inspired Issey Miyake Bao Bao bag, gifted for my 40th. It’s been seven years since I’ve added to my red bag situation.
Until this week, that is. While researching something entirely different, there it was, the most gloriously fringed red shoulder bag I’ve ever seen, quietly hanging out on Mint Velvet’s website.
Here’s what 25 years in fashion have taught me: if a handbag gives you goosebumps from a screen, it’ll be even more magic in real life. And while my shivers usually come courtesy of high fashion items so pricy they remain in ‘wish-list’ territory, the ‘Extreme Fringe ’ as Mint Velvet call it, is a treaty but affordable, £130.
So yes, I did the thing. Clicked, bought, unboxed. It’s the third new item I’ve added to my wardrobe this year (after my FitFlops and a chic grey Clare Waight Keller for Uniqlo blazer).
The verdict? Even better in real life. Made from woven paper, with a water-repellent lining and three practical pockets, it’s roomy, tactile, and so fabulously swishy it makes a soft rustle as I walk —like a grass skirt at a tiki party. ASMR ladies, assemble.
In short, I love it. If you’re game for a statement piece that makes you happy, sparks conversation, and don’t mind strangers smiling at you on your morning commute the way they might at a Labrador puppy, this bag is for you.
