Texas Restriction on Sporting Dog Purchases Left Pending in Committee

On Wednesday, April 9, the Trade, Workforce & Economic Committee took public testimony on legislation that will ban the retail sale of dogs and cats in the Lone Star state. The bill was left pending in committee. This means it will only be considered if the committee adopts a motion to call it up for further consideration.

HB 3458 bans a pet store from selling, offering for sale, or facilitating the sale of animals not bred by the store, but may provide a space to showcase a dog for the purposes of adoption from an animal control agency or non-profit that accepts homeless or unwanted dogs with the purpose of finding a permanent home for the dog.

Animal welfare is important to the Sportsmen’s Alliance, but when logic is applied, not the emotional plea in the name of animal “welfare” that has no real chance of promoting animal safety or humane treatment anywhere in the state.

“This is but another example of animal extremism running amok in state legislatures where elected officials get blinded by piles of misinformation heaped on them by zealots with an extreme ideology,” said Todd Adkins, senior vice president at the Sportsmen’s Alliance. “It is time for sportsmen to rise up and remind animal extremists, this is Texas, don’t mess with us.”

As previously reported, only two years ago, Texas passed a law requiring sporting dog hobby breeders to register as “commercial breeders” in the state, with all the red tape to go with it. Texas politicians have evidently fallen in love with the notion that their job is to throttle the freedom of law-abiding sporting dog enthusiasts as they seek favor with the animal welfare crowd. When will enough be enough?

The legislative session is far from over. Keep an eye on your inbox for updates and further take action alerts. Don’t forget to share this alert and future alerts with your friends, family, and fellow sportsmen and dog owners. Urge them to join you and the Sportsmen’s Alliance in standing up against the rising tide of animal extremists and other radical elements. Working together, we can secure hunting, trapping, and fishing for our children and grandchildren today, tomorrow, and for their future.
