A Texas man has been arrested after being accused of cruelty to animals, with charges related to the deaths of several dogs that were reportedly stolen or adopted. Authorities in Bowie County launched an investigation on October 3 after multiple reports of missing dogs in the area. One of the callers informed police that they suspected a local man was involved in the disappearances.
During a search of the Simms neighborhood, deputies visited the residence of Stuart Duncan Hammonds and his girlfriend. As they approached the property, officers detected the unmistakable scent of decaying animals. Upon further investigation, they discovered a gruesome scene — the remains of seven animals around the home and barn. Authorities uncovered skeletal remains, including 12 identified as dogs. Some of these dog skeletons showed signs of head trauma, which led officials to believe they may have been shot.
The Bowie County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Hammonds allegedly killed four of the dogs during a heated argument with his girlfriend. A witness later confirmed that all 12 dogs had been killed by him. In addition to the charges of animal cruelty, it was discovered that Hammonds had adopted some of the animals through social media, while others were reportedly stolen from neighbors.
Hammonds was arrested on 12 counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals, and his bond has been set at $100,000. Authorities continue to investigate the disturbing case as they seek justice for the animals involved.
