Tragedy strikes in San Diego, California. Recently, Twitter user and co-owner of Trending Politics Collin Rugg shared an incredibly ominous video. The news footage shows a man who came across a bloody dog wandering into his garage. Additionally, the reports detail 26 year old Pedro Ortega walking with his 4-year-old son and two of his unleashed bully dogs. Sadly, though, the animals turned on their owner and viciously attacked Ortega in front of his son. Then, the man passed away on the way to the hospital.

In a sour turn, Rugg and various commenters use the video to argue over pit bulls and bully dogs. Collin insists that owning such pets should be illegal and pulls various stats to back his claim. Moreover, he argues that golden retrievers don’t have this problem when one person says, “It’s not the breed it’s the owner. I’m around pit bulls often, including this “bully looking” type, that around children and protect them. These owners love those dogs and treat them with respect.”
Another Twitter user replies with their own spin on the situation. They claim a time when these pets were resourceful and actually quite safe and useful. Conversely, they say that this becomes an owner issue and that lots of people aren’t as responsible as they think they are. “Once upon a time bully breeds were some of the safest dogs a person could own. They were working dogs with a high pain tolerance and stable temperament. Bad breeders and bad owners turned them into what many are now and it’s a real shame. A great breed ruined,” they tweet.
Ultimately, I hate that these people have used another man’s death to spark dialogue on the internet. It’s never about the tragedy at hand on social media nor is there any meaningful discourse to try and understand the ‘why’ in the matter. Rather, it’s calloused Twitter users callously ranting about dogs with little nuance or compassion for the person that lost their life.
