A teen says she threw out her mom’s carpet after her dog had an accident on it — and her mom isn’t happy.
The U.K.-based 19-year-old recently detailed her experience on Reddit’s popular “Am I the A——?” forum in order to get input from her fellow Reddit users. In the post, the girl explains that her mother is currently abroad visiting family, and while she was gone, the teen’s dog “projectile sharted” all over the apartment they share.
“When I tell you it was awful, it was AWFUL,” the original poster (OP) wrote. “Every single room stunk of it, and the main offender was our living room rug, which was also where the majority of the foul miasma was concentrated.”

“It was quite honestly disgusting, soaked through, and my attempts to throw it in the washing machine (it didn’t fit) only made this worse,” she added.
The OP says that she ultimately discarded the rug and spent around £100 (about $130) of her own money to replace it. She added that while the amount is “not obscene,” it is “quite expensive for a single purchase for us.”

The Redditor says that when she ultimately called her mom to tell her what had happened, her mom was “upset” that she didn’t try harder to salvage the rug.
“Am I the a—— for throwing out my mom’s rug?” the OP asks at the end of her post.
Opinions were divided over whether or not the OP made the right call — though a number of commenters said that it sounded as though the teen did the only thing she could given the circumstances.
“NTA [not the a——],” wrote one person. “That rug was done for no saving it after what your dog did. You tried to clean it but couldn’t and made the right call. Plus you’re paying for a new one so there’s nothing to be mad about. Your mom’s just attached to it but she’ll deal with it.”
Others, however, pointed out that there was a chance the rug could have been saved if the right steps were taken and that the OP perhaps should have called her mom and asked for advice.

Your mother may have wanted to rent/borrow a carpet cleaner; here in the US, you can do a one-day rental (and clean all your carpets/rugs) for […] $40, which is about £30,” said a commenter. They added: “You did what you thought best in a bad situation (we have two dogs, so — been there, done that), but you may not always know all your options. It’s OK to call and ask…”
In an update to her original post, the OP thanked everyone for their input and added some more context in order to better explain why she opted to toss the item in the first place.
“I will admit, when I made my post i was in a complete state and wasn’t completely aware of the proper thing to do,” she wrote. She then added that she suffers from OCD — “specifically [dealing] with compulsions around germs and cleanliness, so the whole situation was quite actually my worst nightmare come true.”
She says that she now knows “how to sort a rug out if this happens again” due to the many tips she received from her fellow Redditors.
