A normally reactive dog surprised his owner after consistently not barking at their new neighbor’s tied-up pet.
TikTok user @jeranitorres shared in a January 24 video that her dog is “severely reactive.” A reactive dog can frustrate owners as they overreact to everyday situations when other canines take it in stride. For example, they might bark hysterically at another person or dog walking past.
The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine reported that reactive dogs become “overly aroused by common stimuli.” They are preoccupied with the trigger, which makes it difficult to control them or move out of the situation. Reactivity in dogs could be due to genetics, however, it is more likely due to previous bad experiences or lack of socialization and training.
When they moved into their home about two months ago, the owner expected her dog to constantly bark at the neighbor’s canine, as he does with other dogs, but he somehow knew to stay silent. In the video, he calmly sits at her feet as he watches the neighbor’s dog across the yard. She wondered why he gets triggered by other dogs, but not this one.
“When we take my dog out on walks he might whine at our neighbor’s dog, but he’s never really barked at him,” she told Newsweek via TikTok. “I was a bit shocked because my dog always barks at unfamiliar dogs.”
To her, she thinks “he can sense her desperation.”

With over 514,400 views on TikTok as of Thursday, the video immediately struck a chord with viewers. They agreed dogs uniquely understand each other, but they were also saddened to hear about the tied-up canine.
“My reactive dogs picks and chooses who he’s bothered by. They can sense something in other dogs,” commented one person.
A second wrote: “Stop, he probably sees your dog living his best life getting love and inside and he’s just tied up. Poor baby!
Several other views expressed their concerns over the neighbor’s dog being tied up. She commented on the video that the dog has food, water and a doggy house, but is ignored by the owners. She added that they “no longer feel comfortable speaking to our neighbor after some bad interactions.”
She explained in a follow-up video that she did not want to contact animal control, thinking the neighbor would only get a warning or fine. She feared the dog would be put in a kennel as a result or possibly killed. Plus, if animal control were to take the dog away, she worried the canine would be placed on a euthanasia list or stuck in a shelter.
She believes getting the dog’s story out and connecting with a potential foster or adopter via social media would be the best way to get the dog out of her neighbor’s possession and into a loving, forever home.
