Tears at moment stray dog “finally feels safe” after being rescued

A video of a stray dog finally feeling comfortable with humans after being rescued in Morocco brought Reddit users to tears.

Sunshine Animal Refuge Agadir, also known as SARA Morocco, received information in February about a 6-month-old puppy left in the street. A representative from the refuge named Hazel told Newsweek that the organization believed the dog named Alma had been hit by a car.

SARA could not immediately take the pup into their care as they were limited in space and were working through an outbreak of parvovirus.

Thankfully, the family who found the dog agreed to look after her for a few weeks before SARA could bring her in. The rescue organization first took Alma to the vet for treatment before returning to the family.

The refuge finally brought Alma into their care on March 1, but it took time for her to feel at ease. A video filmed on March 17, shared on Reddit by u/sproggs44 on r/aww, showed Alma letting her guard down and accepting the love she’s always deserved.

In the clip, a worker at the rescue wraps his arms around Alma and holds her like a baby. Realizing she no longer needs to be scared, she rests her head on his chest.

“Every day she is getting better, walking a bit more and settling well into life at the Farm Refuge, making friends with the cats and dogs and occasional human,” Hazel said.

Alma is known as a Beldi dog, which Hazel said is Moroccan Arabic for “from the countryside.” These dogs are mixed breeds from Morocco.

“Beldis are almost always great dogs, with calm and loyal temperaments and very smart,” Hazel said. “They make amazing pets.”

Alma is currently being sponsored by someone who sends monthly donations to help with her care. Hazel explained that she is not available to be adopted internationally yet.

“As Rabies is endemic in Morocco, we need to vaccinate dogs against rabies, and then there is a waiting period while the blood is tested and the dog is allowed to travel,” she said.

Those interested in other dogs available for adoption now can visit the SARA Morocco website for additional information. Since 2018, this animal refuge has helped rescue over 2,000 dogs from the streets and pounds. They’ve cared for 900 dogs, 200 cats and a handful of equines. They have also neutered over 5,000 animals.

The gentle interaction touched viewers, and as of Thursday, the Reddit post amassed over 9,400 upvotes and 37 comments.

“Breaks my heart that anyone could harm/neglect such a sweet soul,” wrote one user.

“Precious like a baby,” another Redditor commented.

“We’re all crying. So adorable!” said a commenter.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
