The internet was brought to tears by a rescue dog’s sad face upon returning to an animal shelter—but she had no idea that there was a big surprise in store.
The dog, named Franny, was in the shelter for over four months, spending the last two in quarantine with heartworm. Danielle Baughman, who volunteers at the shelter in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, told Newsweek that she would go and sit with her every day for company, but Franny “would get very sad” when that was over, and she had to go back to being alone.
When the quarantine was over, Franny got to spend the day out with another volunteer, named Lindsey, but she was devastated to return to the shelter afterwards. She couldn’t get excited about the prospect of being cooped up in a crate, and as the car pulled up to Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley, her demeanor changed instantly.
“She is a wonderful dog, so a volunteer jumped at the chance to take her on a doggie day out and took Franny to her son’s baseball practice and then a pool party,” Baughman said. “When they pulled into the shelter, Franny’s head hung so low. The volunteer cried all night thinking about how sad she was.”
After Franny left such a lasting mark, Lindsey didn’t waste time before returning again the following day to see her again. She took Franny home for a sleepover, and she was “so well behaved and perfect,” that Lindsey knew she’d found her forever home.
“She took her back to the shelter and recorded her pulling in. Franny’s head hung low again because she didn’t know she was getting adopted,” Baughman continued.
As Lindsey is still one of the shelter’s so-called “doggie day out volunteers,” she regularly sees the staff and will continue giving them updates on how Franny is doing. Baughman is especially grateful for that fact, as she spent a lot of time with the pup and loved her sweet nature.
Baughman regularly uses her social media accounts to raise awareness for the many shelter animals in need of a home, and to show people how loving a rescue dog can be. She posted a clip of Franny on TikTok (@all_dee_aminals) showing the moment she thought she was returning to the shelter for good, only to learn that it was to officially get adopted.
The heartwarming clip went viral and generated over 72,900 views and more than 7,800 likes on TikTok in just a number of days.
“The social media attention to my page has been so great for these shelter dogs. One of my videos got a dog adopted from several states away,” Baughman told Newsweek.
“The shelter’s doggie day out program has been amazing. I focus on the dogs who have been there a long time, including one who has been there for four years. I find out what they’re like outside of the kennel and I love to show their real personalities in these videos in the hopes that someone will give them a chance.”
The devastating sight of Franny’s sadness when she returned to the shelter has left TikTok users in tears. With over 300 comments on the viral TikTok post already, many were delighted to learn that she’s now found a loving home.
Baughman hopes that seeing the instant change in Franny’s temperament will encourage more people to give a shelter dog a second chance.
One comment reads: “Thank you, this made my heart so happy. Have the best life, you deserve it girl.”
Another TikTok user wrote: “What a wonderful outcome, love this.”
While another person responded: “That’s the best news ever!”
