A previously abandoned dog’s reaction to her owner moving house has broken the hearts of viewers online.
The rescue dog was captured looking glum, frightened that she would be left behind once again, as her owner packed around her. Her owner, keen to lift her pet’s spirits, comforted the canine by telling her that she will be coming with her. The video, which was shared to TikTok on December 20 under @the.amber.danielle, has been viewed more than 2.2 million times to date. The short clip has lead to thousands of moved viewers expressing their thoughts on the emotional vulnerability of some rescue dogs in the comments.
Viewers on TikTok were able to see the dog looking around melancholically at the stacked cardboard boxes that housed her owner’s belongings, as if sure that her owner would be moving away alone. Her owner quickly began stroking the visibly distressed dog, reassuring her with cuddles and softly spoken words that they will always stay together.
“I’m not leaving you, you’re not staying here, we’re gonna go together,” she told the dog. “It’s you and me, we’re a packaged deal, you look at me, we’re staying, together.”
An overlaid text on the video read: “Moving when you have a previously abandoned dog.”
It is no secret that dogs who have been through traumatic experiences in the past, such as neglect or abandonment, struggle with anxiety around their future. Several viewers online have applauded the dog’s owner for soothing the canine’s concerns, while some have shared their personal advice on how she can be better supported during the big move.
“My abandoned dog gets upset if we are gone more than a few hours,” one viewer said. “I just taught him grooming is a safe and pleasant experience.”
Another added: “Put a leash on her it helped mine realize they were coming too.”
“Mine was returned to the shelter five times before I got him (he was 11-months-old) I was cleaning my [apartment] once and moved his crate and he started freaking out and wouldn’t leave my side,” another said.
Another added: “I hated that, we moved only three months after adopting an abandoned puppy. Loaded up the U-haul and found her curled up under a counter and not listening to us calling for her. She was so happy to get in the truck with us. Poor puppies!”
“Show him you’re packing up [her] toys too so [she] also knows [she’s] going to,” another said.
“You’re an amazing person for rescuing [her],” another added.
