For anyone questioning how much dogs can feel grief, a TikTok video has an answer.
The clip has gone viral after capturing the heartbreaking moment a woman realized her surviving dog was also grieving the loss of their “soul dog,” his late brother. The video shows the dog fixated on a computer login screen, where his owner’s user icon was a photo of the departed pup. Since the video was posted, it has received over 725,000 likes.
“When you realize it wasn’t just you that lost your soul dog,” the creator, @heyfromjules, captioned the video. “He was so excited to see his big brother again. Excuse me while I go cry.”

The emotion from the dog in the video resonated with TikTok users, many of whom shared their own experiences of pets grieving a lost sibling.
“When my oldest dog died, my second oldest stayed by the front door waiting for her to come home. She wouldn’t get up for food or water and would barely consume anything even if we brought it to her,” one person shared. “Even when she started to be active and act like herself again, she’d stay by the front door any chance she got.”
The dog’s hopeful gaze at the screen brought about sweet interpretations of his thoughts. One commenter imagined him thinking, “Oh that’s where he went? Mom get him out!”
Another heartbreaking story from a vet clinic employee highlighted the depth of animal grief. “I work at a vet clinic, and we had a sibling duo that frequently boarded,” they wrote. “We had to put the brother down and the sister was in the same room saying goodbye. She could tell exactly when he passed and barked for days after, even with meds. I felt so horrible for her.”
One person made an astute observation that broke even more hearts.
“The fact he can see it perfectly surrounded by one of the only colors dogs can see,” they pointed out, referring to the blue hue used on the creator’s login screen, which dogs can distinguish.
But mostly, viewers expressed shared tears and sorrow.
“This is so true,” a person wrote. “My pups look around for my little one when they hear her bark coming from my phone. I feel so bad. My three girls loved each other. I hope your baby is in heaving playing with mine.”
