Itching for a summer day in the pool, one blind and deaf dog left viewers in tears after he thought the gate was closed and he couldn’t go swimming.
Tamale’s routine typically includes waiting by the gate for someone to open it for him. In a July 15 TikTok video posted to the account @tamalethedm, he was doing just that with a giant smile on his face and his paw resting on the gate. He was ready to go and couldn’t wait to get his swim on. But little did he know the opportunity was waiting for him.
The dog didn’t realize that this gate was already open for him. He miscalculated his steps and thought where he was standing was where it opened. If only he had moved slightly over, he would have been swimming already.
The caption reads: “Sometimes he’s a little off on where the gate opens/closes at.”
Viewers were in tears over how close Tamale was to walking through the gate. Luckily, he figured out a few moments later that the gate was already open. He kept that smiling face on and walked right into the pool area.
The owner told Newsweek that Tamale knows how to ask to go into the pool. This video he was patient, but sometimes he barks his demands.
“He will either stand at the gate and bark or if the gate is already open and he walks in, he will go stand at the steps and bark until someone goes and taps him,” the owner said. “Then he will get right in.”
The taps confirm that he is safe to go in, which the owner believes makes him feel more comfortable.
Tamale is great about finding the pool, the owner added in the comment section. He usually keeps along the fence line, calculating the location of the steps. Then he will carefully lower himself into the pool. However, he will sometimes miss a step and slip, but it doesn’t get him down.
He’ll swim a lap or two and always returns to the steps when he is ready to get out. The owner always supervises. Tamale also has a life jacket, but since he has been swimming for over five years, the owner shared in a separate video that Tamale is confident enough to swim without one.
The precious TikTok clip quickly went viral, bringing in over 2 million views, 222,200 likes and 1,200 comments within three days of posting.
“At least he’s being a good, patient boy about it. He’s just like, ‘Whenever you’re ready mom,'” commented a viewer.
Another added: “His paw just being on the gate is sending me.”
A third person said: “He’s first in line.”
Pool Safety Tips for Dogs
Plenty of dogs could spend the entire day splashing around in the pool, but like kids, they need supervision and extra precautions to keep them safe. PetMD published the following as their recommended safety tips for dogs and pools:
- Install a pool fence or gate to keep dogs and children away.
- Consider swimming lessons to prepare your dog and make them feel confident in the water.
- Invest in a life jacket. This will help dogs when they tire out, which is especially useful for younger puppies, large dog breeds and senior dogs.
- Always supervise. Be on the lookout for your dog drinking the water or if they start to get tired.
