‘Taste the difference’: Hanover’s Famous Hot Weiner shop comments on change in hot dogs

Controversy is sizzling in hot dog town, and a legendary hot dog shop has responded to concerns about changes to the taste of its signature hot dogs.

In an announcement made on Thursday, June 12, 2025, the Famous Hot Weiner shared that the company has recently gone through several changes in its hot dogs after their longtime supplier, Kunzler, had discontinued their signature hot dogs.

“We’ve heard your concerns about the recent changes in the taste of our hot dogs,” the post said, “and we want to be transparent about what’s been happening behind the scenes.

In September, the post said, the brand partnered with local supplier Weaver’s of Wellsville, who “initially met their standards,” but then made changes to their process in February.

Those February changes “affected the unique flavor our customers know and love,” the Famous said, and “did not meet our expectations, or yours.”

Response to those changes led to “extensive research and testing” between Weaver’s and the Famous, which resulted in a new hot dog produced by Weaver’s to match the Famous’ longtime signature hot dogs, the release said.

“For the last three weeks, we believe Weaver’s has delivered the quality and taste that lives up to our name,” the announcement said.

“We invite you to stop by and taste the difference for yourself.”

Among the most well-known local spots in Hanover, the Famous Hot Weiner has been a staple of the community for over 100 years, celebrating a century of serving Hanover in 2023.

The shop is currently run by the Keriazes brothers, Tim and George, who are the fourth-generation to run the business.

The pair followed in the footsteps of their great-grandfather, Nicholas E. Mavros, who immigrated to America from Greece before he opened the shop.

Along with two flagship Hanover locations on Broadway and on Dart Drive, the business also has a location in West York.

The shop has seen such popularity, for the last two decades, it has even offered nationwide online deliveries of their signature dishes through their website, www.famoushotweiner.com.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
