PORT CRANE, N.Y. (WBNG) — More than 50 dogs and their owners gathered at Farm by Beer Tree in Port Crane for its first-ever Dog Easter Egg Hunt.
The dog-friendly brewery sponsored the event, which was organized by Belle’s Barkery, a local business specializing in homemade pet treats.
“One of the reasons I have my business is to have special moments between animals and their paw-rents,” said owner of Belle’s Barkery Kara Wendling.
Wendling launched her business three years ago after noticing that many store-bought treats contained preservatives and sugar. As a culinary student, she was inspired to craft healthier snacks for her dog. Soon, she began sharing them with others in the community.
“They’re [the treats] very fragrant; they smell of peanut butter,” she said. “I found Farm by Beer Tree, and they said, ‘sure we have a field, you can definitely invite dogs here and search for your treats’.”
All the available spots were filled within 36 hours of posting the event on Facebook.
Among the attendees was Melanie Stein, who brought her six rescue dogs to join the fun.
“We saw the Easter Egg hunt and thought it would be a good experience for our dogs to come and have a good time,” Stein said.
Stein and her husband are regulars at pet-friendly venues like Beer Tree, and they say they’ll keep coming back.
“They’re [the dogs] a part of the family, and we like to do everything with them. Anywhere we can go with them, we’ll go. So the more dog friendly, the more you’re going to have us as customers,” she said.
Before the hunt began, Wendling greeted every pup with a slice of cake. Once the hunt was underway, dog owners guided their pets on leashes through a designated field to find up to three hidden treats.
The event was free to attend, and guests had an opportunity to buy treats and merch from Belle’s Barkery.
Belle’s Barkery sells all-natural, homemade dog and cat treats through its online shop. The are licensed by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and contain no added sugar or salt.
Wendling hopes to partner with Beer Tree again next spring and host another Dog Easter Egg Hunt.
