NEWBERRY, MI – A longstanding sled dog race is returning to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula this weekend after a two-year hiatus due to insufficient snow.
The dogs didn’t run in 2023 or 2024 when there wasn’t enough snow on the ground to support the event.
Organizers of the Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race confirmed Monday that the event would return to action. It’s scheduled for Friday to Sunday, Jan. 10-12, at venues around Newberry, with the start and finish lines at the Headquarters Lake Equestrian State Forest Campground.
The 45-team cap is full, and some mushers are on a waitlist. There are four classes, including juniors with two to three dogs, 10-dog professional, 6-dog professional and 6-dog sportsman. Race lengths range from three to 37 miles.
While most mushers are from Michigan, a few are coming from as far as Maine and New Hampshire.
This sled dog race has been running since 1999.
