TACOMA, Wash. — The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County is waving adoption fees for all dogs as the shelter faces capacity issues.
The Tacoma Humane posted on social media that they are in urgent need of the community’s help.
“Our shelter is beyond full. There are nearly 130 dogs in our care, with only 89 kennels available, plus 70 in foster homes,” the shelter posted. “Dozens of dogs are sharing space, including one kennel with SEVEN small dogs.”
From Nov. 14-17, adoption fees for all dogs will be waived. For dogs that are in foster care waiting to be spayed or neutered, the shelter offers a “foster-to-adopt option.” Families will be able to adopt a dog and take them home the same day and bring them back for their surgery.
“We are in crisis mode,” said Leslie Dalzell, Chief Executive Officer at the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County. “We have doubled and tripled kennel capacity, with dogs in offices and temporary crates in hallways.”
This year the shelter’s dog intake has increased with 400 more dogs coming into the shelter than this time last year.
According to the shelter, before every dog becomes available for adoption, they undergo a wellness exam, receive initial vaccinations, are microchipped with national registration and are spayed or neutered.
During the summer the shelter experienced overcrowding and waived its adoption fees. They had received over 500 pets in two weeks and their kennels had reached a capacity.
