Tacoma Humane Society seeks dog fosters ahead of kennel renovations

As the calendar approaches a nationwide day to honor shelter animals, the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County is putting out an urgent call for help.

The shelter is asking community members to open their homes to dogs in need of temporary care as it prepares to renovate a critical section of its facility.

Construction on 14 kennels is scheduled to begin May 1 and is expected to last up to four weeks.

“These much-needed kennel improvements will not only expand space for dogs in this area of the shelter, but it will have a positive impact on their overall wellbeing,” said Leslie Dalzell, CEO of the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County. “We’re calling on our community to foster and help us clear the way.”

The kennels undergoing renovation are not typically seen by the public and are used for dogs with behavioral challenges or those held under animal control confiscation.

Thanks to support from the ASPCA and an anonymous donor, the project will include the installation of seven kennel portals.

These upgrades will nearly double the living space available for each dog and add safety features for both the animals and staff.

On average, 68 dogs come through the shelter’s doors every week. Temporarily reducing the shelter’s dog population is essential to make space for continued animal intake during the construction period.

In addition to the foster push, the shelter is reminding the community that April 30 is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day — a chance to make a more permanent difference in an animal’s life.

“Finding loving homes, whether temporary or permanent, is essential as we prepare for these kennel renovations,” Dalzell said. “We’re here to help match individuals and families with a pet that’s right for them.”

A variety of animals — including dogs, cats, and rabbits — are currently available to meet at the shelter.

Potential adopters and fosters can view animals and submit interest forms online.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
