BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) — a 28-year-old man wanted for murder in Georgia was arrested in Baldwin County on Sunday after he allegedly committed an assault and robbery along Interstate 65, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
According to Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, on Sunday, May 18, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office assisted in a vehicle pursuit that began in Conecuh County, Alabama with a wanted murder suspect out of Georgia who had already fired shots at pursuing officers.
Baldwin County deputies were able to spike the vehicle’s tires, bringing the chase to an end. The suspect then ran from the vehicle and attempted to car-jack an 18 wheeler, striking the driver multiple times in the head and face with a pistol. A passenger in the 18 wheeler fired several shots at the suspect, who then jumped off the truck and ran into the woods.
Due to the nature of the subject’s warrant, as well as him being armed with a gun and having fired it at pursuing deputies, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was activated. With the assistance of ALEA’s Troopers and air unit, the Alabama Department of Corrections tracking dogs, and numerous other agencies, the suspect, Mike Thomas, was located arrested around 5:45 Monday morning after an over 6 hour search. Thomas had a gunshot wound to his leg, presumed to have occurred during the attempted car-jacking.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will be assuming the case due to crimes spanning several counties.
This is a shining example of how agency cooperation and teamwork leads to a successful outcome. We thank all of the involved agencies and the patience of the public during this prolonged event.
