FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) – The Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) has charged individuals accused of abandoning three dogs in a remote area.
Two people called Fairfield County deputies to an isolated portion of Old Camden Road near Highway 21 at around 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon. They told deputies they had discovered three dogs that had been abandoned in a crate.
The callers said they had seen a video of the dogs’ abandonment circulating on social media, which prompted them to go to the scene.
Deputies examined the area and found one of the dogs had died while the other two were trapped in a crate without food or water. They said both dogs were severely malnourished.
FCSO said both animals were taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment, but one of them died shortly after.
Law enforcement found the suspects and questioned them about the incident. They initially told deputies they had rehomed the dogs because they were unable to care for them, but ultimately confessed to collaborating with a third party to leave them on Old Camden Road with no means of survival.
The Sheriff’s Office said they are actively pursuing arrest warrants on charges of ill-treatment of animals and abandonment of animals.
The suspects’ identities have not been revealed at this time.
