As summer approaches, Camp Bow Wow, North America’s leading pet care franchise, is committed to ensuring hot days don’t become dangerous for our four-legged

friends.

Summer dangers for pets include heat exhaustion, dehydration, paw burns, sunburn and chemical or bacterial poisoning from pool water, lakes and ponds.

Even worse, hundreds

of pets die each year after being left in parked vehicles, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

“Taking extra steps to keep pets safe during the summer is crucial, as the heat and summer activities can pose significant risks to pets,” said Camp

Bow Wow’s Animal Health & Behavior Expert, Erin Askeland, CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA. “Dogs are sensitive to high temperatures – generally, anything over 85 degrees is too hot for dogs – so it’s important to protect them on hot days as you would any other family member.”

Askeland shares her top tips to ensure pet parents have a safe and fun summer with their pups:

·Never leave a dog unattended in the car,

even if the windows are down, as dogs can suffer from heatstroke in just 15 minutes.

o Heatstroke symptoms in dogs can include an elevated body temperature, excessive panting and drooling, rapid or irregular heartbeat, diarrhea or vomiting, weakness and staggering, dry, pale gums and a bright red tongue.

o If you suspect your dog may be suffering from heatstroke, lower its body temperature by applying towels soaked in cool water to its entire body, especially in areas with the least amount of fur, including the inside of the back legs. Then, take your dog to the closest veterinary hospital for treatment.

·Before walking your dog, check the path’s temperature

by placing your hand flat on the surface they’ll be walking on and hold it for 10 seconds. If this isn’t comfortable, the surface is too hot for your dog to walk on.

· Prevent sunburn by applying nontoxic, dog-safe sunscreen to your dog.

Even dogs can suffer from sunburn, which can result in peeling, redness and even skin cancer. Dogs with short or light-colored hair are at the greatest risk, and the spots most prone to burning that pet parents should focus on applying sunscreen to include

inside the nostrils, the tip of the nose, around the lips and the inside of standup ears. Pet parents can find dog-safe sunscreen at their local pet supply stores or online.

· Keep your dog hydrated

during the summer by providing extra water and changing the water several times daily to prevent bacteria from growing in hot water, which can make a dog sick.

· Never allow your dog to drink from a body of water,

including swimming pools, lakes and ponds. Chemicals in pools and organisms that live in lakes and ponds can make pets sick.

Camp Bow Wow Camps feature indoor, climate-controlled play yards, allowing dogs to exercise and socialize safely with their friends all summer
