DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – Local veterinarian Michelle Spencer of Care Animal Center warns of the up-tick in a certain pest this year.
“We’re definitely seeing an increase in tick infections and definitely seeing them showing up earlier in the season than we normally did.”
If your dog plays outside, often experts recommend to check your pet for a bite in the form of a raised bump.
When that bite gets infected, the bump can become large and turn red – and having pus discharge.
The infection could lead to Lyme disease, which may lead to kidney issues, she said.
“Once this starts happening, unfortunately there’s no reversing it,” said Spencer.
How can you protect your dog?
Chewable preventatives, such as Nextgard, work best, she said. Oral preventatives appear to provide better protection than topical applicants, but some protection is better than no protection.
Spencer also highly recommends getting your dog, even puppies, the Lyme vaccination this season.
