Street Dog Hero welcomed 28 dogs from a shelter in Norman, Oklahoma, at the Bend Airport on Sunday, thanks to a partnership with Dog Is My Copilot.
The flight was the final scheduled transport of the year, aimed at easing overcrowded shelters across the country.
“The groups are always very excited about receiving the dogs and the source groups are very excited about having the dogs go out to find new homes, it’s just a positive experience all the way around,” said Frank Maresca, the pilot coordinator for Dog is My CoPilot.
As shelters fill up, difficult decisions are often made, putting vulnerable animals at risk. By relocating these dogs from the Oklahoma shelter, Street Dog Hero helped free up vital space for other animals in need.
“This partnership means so much to us and that shelter in particular is a really good example of a lot of the shelters across the country that are facing overcrowding,” said Kristen Elrod, the executive director at Street Dog Hero.
The dogs will receive veterinary care and be placed in foster homes or up for adoption.
