BEND, Ore. — With the future of a Madras animal shelter still uncertain, Central Oregon’s Street Dog Hero has stepped in to rescue all of the shelter’s remaining dogs to protect them from potential euthanasia.
The Bend-based nonprofit has partnered with Herding Dogs Rescue to take in the 50 dogs left at the shelter which is set to close at the end of the month.
The dogs were transported to Street Dog Hero’s Bend facility Tuesday night. According to the organization, this move provides a safe haven for the animals, preventing them from being euthanized.
“Even though this was, of course, not the ideal time, we decided to just make it happen because we, of course, don’t want that for those dogs,” said Kristen Elrod, Executive Director of Street Dog Hero. “Everyone in the community was really passionate about this. So it was really important to all of us to save these dogs and really help out our community.”
Street Dog Hero is reaching out to other rescue organizations and foster families who can assist in caring for these dogs. Anyone interested in helping can contact Street Dog Hero directly. Email jaymie@streetdoghero.org.
