WEDGEFIELD, S.C. (WIS) – A trooper with the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) used deadly force to stop an attacking dog, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO).
Deputies said a state trooper arrived at a Wedgefield home at around 11 a.m. Sunday morning to deliver paperwork. As the trooper approached the home, dogs began barking.
When the trooper turned to walk back to the patrol vehicle, deputies said a pit bull ran from underneath the home and charged towards the trooper. SCSO said the trooper yelled “Get back!” before shooting and killing the dog to prevent an attack.
SCSO investigated the case by speaking with the trooper and the family who owned the dog as well as reviewing the trooper’s body-cam footage. They were able to determine the trooper’s actions were justifiable as there was evidence the trooper feared for their life from the attacking dog.
Sumter Sheriff Anthony Dennis said he was relieved the trooper was not injured.
