Stark Co. deputy fired after fatally shooting dog, seriously injuring another

CANTON, Ohio (WOIO) – A Stark County Sheriff deputy was fired after fatally shooting a dog and injuring another on Tuesday.

According to the release, a resident in the 800 block of 6th Street SW called 911 to report two aggressive stray dogs roaming the neighborhood.

Deputies said the caller reported that the dog had attacked and bitten her grandson.

In the release, deputies said additional information indicated a second person was also bitten.

A deputy from the Stark County Sheriff’s Office Dog Warden Division responded and located the dogs in the 800 block of 5th Street SW, according to the release.

When the deputy approached the dogs, he shot at them, killing one and seriously injuring the other.

Deputies said the injured dog underwent surgery and is expected to survive.

The dog owner was cited for allowing the dogs to run at large.

According to the release, after an initial review of the incident, the deputy was terminated for failing to follow protocols for handling aggressive animals.
