ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Three firefighters are being recognized for their heroic efforts during a call that potentially saved a young man’s life.
The St. Lucie County Fire District (SLCFD) said Lieutenant Anthony Hood, Engineer Justin Harnage, and Paramedic Eric Wright responded to a dog attack on May 23. While en route, the firefighters were informed that a mother was witnessing her son being mauled by three large dogs through her Ring camera.
When crews arrived, the man in his 20s was, “being tossed around like a rag doll,” according to Wright.
Working quickly, the SLCFD said Wright grabbed a CO2 extinguisher off the truck and charged the dogs, spraying them until two of the dogs retreated inside, and Wright shut the door.
SLCFD said Harnage used a master stream, a controllable high-capacity water jet, and Hood used a hose line to push the dog back. Hood continued following after the dog with the hose until the injured man and rescue crew were safely inside the fire truck.

The Fire District said for their dedication, PM Eric Wright will be recognized with a lifesaving award, while Lt. Anthony Hood and Eng Justin Harnage will be recognized with meritorious awards. The three will be honored at the St. Lucie County Commission Chambers at 5160 NW Milner Drive, during the Fire Board Meeting at 3 p.m. on August 21.

Their actions exemplify the highest standards of our district and serve as a powerful reminder of the dedication and selflessness that our firefighters demonstrate every day. It is an honor to work alongside such outstanding individuals,” SLC Fire Chief Jeff Lee said.
