BASEBALL
Sterlin Thompson scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning to cap Hartford’s comeback from a four-run deficit as the Yard Goats rallied for a 5-4 win over the Portland Sea Dogs in an Eastern League game Sunday afternoon in Hartford, Connecticut.
The Sea Dogs jump ahead earlier, getting an RBI single from Alex Binelas and a run-scoring double from Tyler Miller in the top of the first. Karson Simas made it 4-0 with a two-run double in the fourth.
Home runs by Warming Bernabel in the bottom of the fourth and Ryan Ritter in the fifth started Hartford’s comeback.
The Sea Dogs are off until Friday, when they begin a three-game series against Reading at Hadlock Field.
GOLF
PGA: Robert MacIntyre made a 22-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 3-under 67 to win the Scottish Open, becoming the first Scot in 25 years to win his national open.
MacIntyre pulled into a tie with Adam Scott (67) when he eagled the 16th hole, then sank a clutch putt on 18 to finish at 18 under and earn his second victory this season.
PGA TOUR AMERICAS: Caleb Manuel of Topsham tied for 56th place at the Explore NB Open after the fourth round of the PGA Tour Americas event in Fredericton, New Brunswick, was canceled because of bad weather.
Two full rounds were scheduled Sunday, and some players also had to complete their second round. Manuel, who carded a 5-under 66 on Saturday, followed up with a 69 in the third round to get to 9 under overall, then was 3 under through nine holes in the fourth round before play was suspended.
Ian Holt won with a three-round score of 26 under.
LPGA: Ayaka Furue of Japan won the Evian Championship with an eagle on the last hole in Evian-Les-Bains, France, capturing her first major title.
Furue, 24, was 5 under over the last five holes to shoot a 6-under 65 and finish at 19 under. That was one stroke better than Australia’s Stephanie Kyriacou (67) and two ahead of Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit (63).
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Ernie Els won the Kaulig Companies Championship in Akron, Ohio, for his first senior major title, closing with a 2-under 68 to beat Y.E. Yang by one stroke.
Els finished at 10-under 270.
Yang bogeyed the par-4 18th in a 66.
LIV: Sergio Garcia claimed his first LIV Golf victory, beating Anirban Lahiri in a playoff in Sotogrande, Spain.
García made up a seven-stroke deficit on Lahiri by shooting a 5-under 66.
AMERICAN CENTURY CHAMPIONSHIP: Former tennis player Mardy Fish won the celebrity golf tournament in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada, for the second time, holding off NHL player Joe Pavelski by four points, 83-79, in the modified Stableford scoring system.
Fish also won the Drive Fore Kids celebrity event at Falmouth Country Club in June.
AUTO RACING
INDYCAR: Will Power broke through at Iowa Speedway, holding off Alex Palou by 0.3915 seconds to win the second half of a weekend doubleheader.
It was Power’s 43rd career IndyCar win, but his first at Iowa, and his first on an oval since winning at Pocono in 2019.
Scott McLaughlin, who won Saturday’s race, finished third.
Power had already crossed the finish line when the car driven by Sting Ray Robb flipped after contact with Alexander Rossi’s car. Robb’s car slid on its top down the backstretch, while Rossi’s car collided with the cars of Kyle Kirkwood and Ed Carpenter, with Carpenter’s car ending up on top of Kirkwood’s.
Robb was taken to a local hospital, but IndyCar officials said he was awake, alert and in good condition.
FOOTBALL
NFL: Jacoby Jones, whose 108-yard kickoff return for the Baltimore Ravens in 2013 remains the longest touchdown in Super Bowl history, has died. He was 40.
There was no immediate word on a cause of death.
Jones played from 2007-15 for the Texans, Ravens, Chargers and Steelers.
CYCLING
TOUR DE FRANCE: Tadej Pogacar demonstrated his climbing dominance once again, winning the grueling 15th stage on Bastille Day with a scorching ascent to the Plateau de Beille.
Pogacar attacked with 5 kilometers remaining in a 124-mile stage that featured five big climbs. He finished more a minute ahead of two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard, who is now 3 minutes, 9 seconds behind Pogacar in the overall standings.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: Rachel Banham scored a career-high 24 points, hitting eight 3-pointers to match a team record as the Connecticut Sun beat the visiting Phoenix Mercury, 96-69.
Banham, who was 8 for 11 from behind the arc, was one 3-pointer short of the WNBA record.
• A’ja Wilson scored 28 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, Kelsey Plum scored 22 points, and the visiting Las Vegas Aces rallied from a 13-point second-quarter deficit to beat the Washington Mystics, 89-77.
• Kelsey Mitchell scored 21 points, and Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark finished with 17 apiece to help the visiting Indiana Fever defeat the Minnesota Lynx, 81-74.
• Ezi Magbegor scored 18 points and Jordan Horston added 16 to lead the Seattle Storm past the Atlanta Dream, 81-70.
