TYLER, Texas — An outside behavioral specialist is heading to Tyler this week to assess the dogs rescued from a suspected dogfighting ring in Smith County last month.
The specialist is coming from Florida and they are expected to arrive Friday. The purpose is to determine if they are adoptable or too aggressive to be family pets.
On Sept. 9, 60 dogs were seized after Smith County law enforcement investigated a property on County Road 4136. Most of the dogs are under the care of Smith County Animal Shelter at this time.
Brothers Kerry and Michael Jones are both facing animal cruelty charges.
Many of the dogs had fresh injuries and visible blood and scars consistent with fighting, the arrest affidavit shows. Some reportedly appeared lethargic and unable to move. Investigators also found equipment that seemed to be connected to dogfighting.
