HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Southern Pines Animal Shelter answered a call to duty beyond the Pine Belt this week.
The shelter has been working closely with police in Macon, Mississippi.
Original reports said 21 small dogs were being kept in one muddy pen with limited food.
Six dogs died while being kept in those conditions.
The remaining 15 dogs arrived in Hattiesburg on Tuesday and are doing just fine, the shelter said.
“They were kind of unsure,” said Dani Snell, SPAS development manager. “There was a lot of upheaval (Tuesday), a lot of new situations. But they seem to be settling in a lot better (Wednesday).
“You know, their bellies are full, they’ve had a quiet night and they seem to be a lot more settled (Wednesday).”
The shelter thanked its supporters for giving it the ability to rescue operations of this type possible.
“They came back to the shelter and got their intake exams, their vaccines, their preventatives,” Snell said. “And, you know, we just got them settled in and warm beds, lots of food, clean water
“And we just really appreciate everyone in the community that helps make this happen. We are funded by donations primarily. And we can’t do these kinds of things without the support of our community.”
All of the rescued dogs will be ready for adoption soon, Snell said.
Many were spayed or neutered on Wednesday.
Southern Pines is also accepting monetary donations here to help with the costs of caring for the 15 new rescues.
