In a distressing incident in Las Vegas, six dogs were found dead inside a locked moving truck during extreme heat, prompting swift action by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). Officers rescued and seized several other pets from two vehicles in the same location.
The discovery began when a concerned individual called 911 around 3 p.m. to report a dog locked in a U-Haul truck parked at Mountain View Hospital on N. Tenaya Way. Responding officers found the dog in distress and promptly broke the window to rescue it. The dog, a mixed breed, is reported to be in good condition. Upon further inspection of the U-Haul, police found six more dogs, all deceased, in the rear compartment of the truck. Other than the animals, the truck was empty.
Nearby, officers also investigated a burgundy SUV parked several spots away. Inside, they found two dogs and two cats, all of which were in good condition due to the vehicle’s air conditioning being on.
A man, believed to be the possible owner of both the U-Haul and SUV, is currently in custody. A total of ten animals were discovered between the two vehicles, but it remains unclear if he owns all the animals. Police have not yet confirmed the reason for the man and the animals being in the hospital parking lot.
The Animal Cruelty section of the LVMPD is conducting a thorough investigation to determine if the deaths were due to heat or neglect. Potential charges, which could be either felony or misdemeanor, are being considered based on the findings.
Lt. Bill Giblin of the LVMPD highlighted the preventable nature of this tragedy. “If your dog’s in your vehicle at any point of the day this time of year, there’s a potential they can become dehydrated and die as a result,” he said. The inside temperature of a closed moving truck can exceed 140 degrees, creating a lethal environment for animals.
The Animal Foundation, which is aiding in the aftermath, is awaiting the arrival of the animals seized during the investigation. They have not yet provided an update on their condition.
