Summit County Sheriff’s Office resources helped last week to respond to multiple cases of aggressive dogs, a large avalanche that had been spotted from Interstate 70 and a report from a resident who said someone was defecating in his yard.

The following incidents occurred between Monday, March 17, and Saturday, March 22, according to the weekly log of notable calls published by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

On Monday, March 17, a man and his girlfriend who recently decided to foster a dog from Denver were bitten by the dog, which became aggressive, resulting in minor injuries. They were able to close the dog in a bedroom and seek medical attention. Summit County Animal Control officers met with the couple at the doctor’s office and confirmed that they wanted the dog removed from the home. With permission, the animal control officers went into the home, removed the dog and took him to a shelter.

On Tuesday, March 18, a woman was enjoying time with her dog at “The Beach” at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area when another dog owner let his dog out of his vehicle. The other dog jumped on her dog and a fight broke out between the two dogs. The woman attempted to separate the dogs and was bitten by the other man’s dog. As a result, Animal Control officers issued the man a bite confinement order for his dog.

On Wednesday, March 19, deputies received a report of an overdue skier who had been skiing at A-Basin for the day. The missing man’s vehicle was located at the A-Basin parking lot and all of his equipment was in the vehicle. While continuing to search for the missing skier, the original caller who had reported him overdue called back and advised he had taken a ride home from friends after having too many drinks to drive home.

On Friday, March 21, someone spotted a large avalanche in the Shrine Bowl from Interstate 70 with visible snowmobile tracks in the area of the slide path. Deputies flew a drone over the area and were able to confirm that the avalanche had tracks going in as well as out of the debris.

Also Friday, a Summit County resident received an automated voicemail claiming to be from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, which told him he had missed a federal subpoena for a court hearing in Denver. The man suspected it was a scam and did not exchange any money or information.

In another incident Friday, a man hiking on a popular trail in the Wildernest area reported an encounter with an aggressive dog that nipped at him and tore his pants. He had a heated discussion with the dog’s owner, during which they exchanged phone numbers. The man requested reimbursement for his torn pants. Animal control officers spoke with both individuals but the dog owner denied that his dog had caused the damage. The officers were unable to determine whether the dog was responsible for the tear in the pants. Both parties involved were warned and educated by the officers.

On Saturday, March 22, a woman reported an aggressive and rude encounter on the recpath near the Dillon Reservoir. The woman had been out walking her dog when a man riding a bike passed them and nearly hit the dog. The woman said the man didn’t give any warning that he was coming up behind them, that she had asked him to announce his approach next time and that that led the man to start cursing and calling her vulgar names. Deputies searched the area but were unable to find the cyclist.

Also Saturday, a resident of Keystone reported an incident involving an unknown man who drove up in front of the resident’s house and attempted to defecate in the willows outside the home. When the resident yelled at the man to leave, the man responded he was desperate before getting back into his car and driving away. The man did not leave anything behind. Deputies searched the area but did not locate the man.
