SISTERS, Ore. — Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies responded Thursday to a reported dog attack on U.S. Forest Service land (USFS Road 1505/430 Spur), about three miles southwest of Sisters.
According to police, three aggressive dogs living in a nearby homeless camp attacked a man and his dog after exiting his vehicle.
Fearing for his safety, he used a knife to defend himself and his dog. Two of the three attacking dogs died at the scene.
Deputies determined his actions were justified.
The man and his dog sustained minor puncture wounds and received medical care.
Two of the attacking dogs died at the scene, while a third, found at a nearby transient camp, was later euthanized due to its injuries. The first two dogs were transported to Brightside Animal Shelter and the third dog was transported to the Bend Humane Society.
Deputies cited a transient woman, identified as the dogs’ owner, for three counts of Animal at Large and Animal Nuisance, both violations.
The U.S. Forest Service assisted in the investigation.
Deputies also received reports of past aggressive dog incidents in the area, the sheriff’s office said.
