Some animals might hold onto hope when they enter a shelter. They believe there might be a better life for them once they’re out of there, but far too often, animals are left with hope waning each day.
One dog found herself giving up on finding a forever home. A TikTok video posted on September 2 by user @_thatdoggirl_ showed a small dog named Tinker sitting inside the kennel at Florida’s Saving Sage Animal Rescue. Her back faced everyone. She wouldn’t turn around. Instead, she hung her head in disappointment, pondering what had become of her life.
The video creator, Dali, told Newsweek via TikTok that Tinker would sit like that for “hours at a time.” She wouldn’t budge. Hope vanished. Unfortunately, she’s not the only one to give up while living in an animal shelter for days, weeks or months at a time.

For Tinker getting a potential family to give her a chance was difficult because many believed her to be aggressive. However, Dali explained in the caption that Tinker is a sweet dog. She “wants to be cuddled,” but when meeting strangers, she gets scared and doesn’t like to get picked up. It was the only reason stopping Tinker from being adopted.
Thankfully, after posting the TikTok video, which brought in more than 414,500 views, good news came for the pup. The clip connected Tinker to her forever family, and she was finally adopted.

Another added: “Ppl should start realizing that once you have a dog you should give them everything till their last breath poor baby.”

Each year, 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters, an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 during January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared with January 2022, the 24Pet Shelter Watch Report found.
About 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.
