A fire in west Bexar County claimed 6 dogs’ lives while over 30 were rescued.
BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — Six dogs have died, and more than 30 were rescued during a house fire Friday morning in far west Bexar County.
We did speak with the homeowner off camera, who is very emotional after this traumatic event. Now, many in the foster and rescue community are rallying behind her.
“She is obviously devastated by the loss of some of her personal pets and of course the fosters. I think she would have given her life, if they could still be alive,” said Ashley Book, 4 Little Paws Rescue.
Book says she arrived at the home, about 15 minutes after the fire started.
“The owner of the house was awoken by one of her dogs, one of her personal dogs who was barking. She felt like she heard a pop initially, and when the dog kept barking, she got up and opened her front door, and noticed her entire front porch was on fire,” said Book.
Book says there were a total of 38 dogs inside the home when the fire started. The homeowner then started rushing them into the backyard while firefighters arrived.
“Unfortunately some of them kept following her back into the home, and those are the ones that didn’t make it,” said Book.
Five died in the home, and one died on the way to the hospital. Two dogs that died belonged to the homeowner, and a tortoise the owner had for more than 30 years also died in the fire.
Book says when she arrived things were chaotic, but about 50 volunteers came out and were able to help put the dogs in kennels.
“I did what I could to try and assess some of them as far, and they were given oxygen to some of them,” said Book.
All dogs were eventually accounted for. Book says most were taken to a hospital for emergency care, which required a 12-hour stay.
“There are two in guarded condition and being treated for respiratory issues, and then about 4 of them for some burns,” said Book.
A GoFundMe was started and has raised more than $6,000 to help with medical cost, and to help the homeowner get back on her feet.
“She was one of the head people or the one of the main medical fosters, and she cared for them. She knows more about medical issues probably than some veterinarians here, and she took excellent care of all of the dogs,” said Book.
