SHASTA LAKE, Calif. — The City of Shasta Lake Animal Shelter has launched a new program to help residents save money on spaying and neutering their dogs. The shelter is offering a $200 voucher to Shasta Lake residents, funded by a grant from the California for All Animals program and UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine.
“So, the program is to kind of assist our residences to ensure that they’re able to kind of get their animals altered which is spayed or neutered without feeling that heavy pinch of that cost of doing so,” said Shadrack Boone, City of Shasta Lake Animal Shelter Supervisor. “…because of the shortage of veterinarian staff, the prices can range pretty high.”
Boone explained that the cost of the procedure varies based on factors such as the dog’s size, weight, and breed, with some procedures costing as much as $1,000 for a Corgi.
Residents can apply for vouchers for up to four dogs per household, provided they can prove ownership and residency in Shasta Lake. The shelter is also seeking volunteers to help make a difference in the community.
