Shang-Chi star Simu Liu wants to make a Sleeping Dogs movie. The actor revealed that he is actively working to get a hold of the rights for a film adaptation of the 2012 video game.
In a post responding to a fan, Liu said he is “working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen!”. The news comes mere weeks after Donnie Yen, previously attached to the Sleeping Dogs adaptation, confirmed that the project was canceled.

This isn’t the first time that Liu has expressed interest in starring in a Sleeping Dogs adaptation. During the San Diego Comic-Con conference in 2022 (via The Illuminerdi), Lou said the following:
“And I’m probably not supposed to say anything. We’re just super jumping the gun on it. But there’s a video game out there that features a, shall we say, Asian-American protagonist that takes place in Hong Kong. That I might be working – I don’t know – I don’t know. I’m not gonna say the name because I didn’t want it to be – I don’t want to jump the gun on it. But it’s something I’m really excited to be diving in on.”

Before that, Liu expressed interest in starring in a Sleeping Dogs movie in a Reddit post in 2021, right around when Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was releasing.
Sleeping Dogs follows Wei Shen, an undercover Chinese-American police officer infiltrating a Triad organization. The open world game, set in Hong Kong, was developed by the now-defunct United Front Games. While the game was successful and had a sequel in development, it was ultimately canned when United Front Games closed its doors in 2016.
A Sleeping Dogs movie has been in various stages of development since 2017, with Indonesian director Timo Tjahjanto boarding the project last year. It’s unclear whether the director remains attached to the project.
Sleeping Dogs is available on PC, macOS, PS4, and Xbox One.
