‘Severely unsanitary and unsafe.’ Young children, dogs, drugs taken from Rumford home

A Rumford man is facing numerous charges after police say they found a lot of drugs in his home, where they also describe the conditions inside as “severely unsanitary and unsafe” for the two young children and animals living there with him.At about 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Rumford Police Chief Tony Milligan says officers from the Rumford Police Department, assisted by the Norway Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the U.S. Border Patrol, executed a search warrant at 244 Pine St. in Rumford as part of an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking and illegal gun possession.Police say they had received several tips from people in the community about ongoing weapons and drug activity at the home.Police arrested Alexander Kubesh, 33, on Lincoln Ave. in Rumford and charged him with felony possession of methamphetamine, felony possession of fentanyl, felony possession of crack cocaine and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Milligan called Kubesh a multi-state offender, saying he has a criminal history that includes convictions in Maine for disorderly conduct, violating bail, felony trafficking in scheduled drugs, and probation violation, making it illegal for him to have guns.When police searched the home on Pine Street, they say they found “living conditions that were severely unsanitary and unsafe, posing significant health and safety risks to two young children, ages 4 and 5, as well as two young dogs.”Police immediately contacted DHHS Child Protective Services and the children were taken into emergency custody. The Rumford Animal Control Officer responded and took custody of the dogs. Police say they did not find any guns in the home, but they did find gram quantities of crack cocaine and fentanyl, a small quantity of methamphetamine and several pounds of processed marijuana. The marijuana was seized by federal officers while Rumford Police took the rest of the drugs as evidence.Kubesh was taken to the Oxford County Jail in South Paris and is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday.
